    I think it got squished a bitby my mum, it's really ever so soft.

    Sometimes the eggs are so soft they don't even have a shell to speak of - just a thick membrane. They're very odd - like a balloon filled with water.

    if the egg shell is thin or not present then there could not be enough calcium in the chickens food. feed them with egg shells or carotts that should help.

    Khams right about the calcium thing - the same thing happens to bone formation and strength in humans when calcium deficient...However, on what to feed chickens deficient in calcium I haven't a clue mate...their not really the sort of birds I like spending time with.

    Although a lack of dietary calcium is the main cause of Calcium deficiency in Chickens it can also be brought on by chronic or excessive egg laying (do you use artificial light with your chickens?).

    Thanks guys, I know it's a calcium deficiency, and it rarely happens because they get lots of good food, grit to eat, plenty of vegetables, and as much sunlight as our cloudy skys can offer - but sometimes one still goes funny and lays a wobbler.

    We're not a battery farm or anything, we just have about forty birds of various breeds pottering about, doing what they want and laying our breakfast eggs :o)

    Afraid not, that'd be the rare Venezuelan Breakfast Chicken that you're thinking of.

    We just have bantams, silkies and beautiful french hens.

    We feed back to the chickens we had all their egg shells (after crushing) and their shells sometimes where so thick you could drop the egg off of the kitchen counter and they would not break. We always had a hard time breaking them. We had one hen thought that occasionally laid an ege without a shell??!! It was an egg in a bag?? Give it a try.

    We have a wide variety of different breeds, but where do you get your French Hens from, and are they true breed French Morans. I would be very interested to buy some myself.
