There's a great story I remember from William Goldman (writer of The Princess Bride) about Andre always insisting on paying for the meal when he went to a restaurant. Once, his fellow diner, desperate to pay for a change, snuck into the kitchen and tried to handover the cash. Andre caught him, picked him up, walked him back to their table and plonked him down on his chair like he was a small child, saying: "I always pay."

The friend was Arnold Schwartzeneggar (sp?).

A truly remarkable man and a sad loss.

I met him in the 70's on a flight to Los Angeles. He seemed of a gentle and quiet nature. But the man was HUGE! One cannot imagine the challenges someone of such stature must face on a daily basis. A coctail glass, the likes of which I couldn't put my hand around, fit between his fingers much like a shot glass might in mine.
