Snow, by torchlight

27th February 2004, terribly early in the morning | Comments (36)

It’s one-thirty in the morning. Should you go to bed? Or should you take the dog for a run in the snow, and then spend an hour leaping around the field with a torch and a camera?

Hmmm, decisions, decisions…

Dunstan they are brilliant images. Not only do you have the technical know-how, but you also have a fantastic imagination. I would never have even conceived of such images, let alone been able to photograph them.

    Stunning. Well done.

Those images show my friends waving burning branches about - a bit more exciting than me and a torch :op

Tonight at 1:30 i'm going to take your advice and not go to bed, but instead stay up. I'll have to make some changes because its friday night.

Instead of Poppy i'll replace her with a hot chick.
Instead of snow, um.. good old grass, cant bet grass.
Instead of a torch a can of Victorian Bitter. ;)
    Camera, won't change that.

    Good work Dunstan.

    Dunstan,

Amazing photos. Out of interest, what camera do you use to get these great shots?

    Cheers,

As others have said "Wicked" is a great way to describe those. Well done. I think you made the right decision. Did the dog have as much fun as you did??

Nice, very nice. Childish indeed! :)

I like these kind of shots. I've taken a bunch whilst bored in the passenger's seat of a freeway-bound vehicle. You can get some really grunge shots as well as some beautiful shots.

Good photo's may I ask how long your shutter time was?

I'd assume a good few seconds?

The dog has fun doing anything, as long as it's not sitting in the house.

Plenty of things to sniff outside, and that always makes her happy :o)

  20. Dunstan:

The shutter time was 30 seconds, at 800 asa, and... um, with something like an aperture of 8 or 9.5.

I would have done more, but that's the longest the camera does before going into BULB mode.

The purple streaks actually look like figures. You could pass this off as photos of faeries. People might believe you.

What the hell do your neighbours think?

I can imagine a conversation such as:

Looking out of window. "What the hell is that?"
    "What?"
"There's some lights dancing about in that field."
Coming to window and looking out.
    "Is that someone causing them?"
"Oh, it's just that Dunstan kid from next door, y'know, the odd creative one, does things with web sites."
"Ah, that explains it then." Stares for a second, then shakes head. "What a weirdo. Time for bed I think."

I can only begin to imagine how that is done ... camera work is one realm I'm completely confused in.

P.S. - dogs like being outside because it keeps their noses wet and cold so that when they nose you, makes you laugh.

I took the photos myself, Ciaran - I set the camera up on a tripod, gave myself a good depth of focus, hit the button and ran in front of the camera while the timer counted down.

    No-one else needed :o)

I use a 15s long exposure on my Canon.

Try getting your friends to hold a torch each and then write one letter each in reverse to make a logo or name.
its a really neat effect !

You have to time it so that they dont wait too long - smoothly and quickly trace the letters.

Dunstan - nice photos but if I were to wave a burning branch outside (I live in London,UK) I would get into trouble ! :-)
