Cheep cheep, baaaa

13th April 2004, late evening | Comments (26)

Spring is most definitely in the air, and as much as I’m looking forward to San Francisco (only ten days to go now) it’s going to be quite hard to leave the countryside and head to a city just as nature gets its groove on.

Lovely pictures. It's a bit strange to see the blue numbers on the sheep, though. :)

Hmm, I think it's supposed to be a gamboling lamb.. a gambling lamb is something we don't want to encourage in our young livestock :)

Jennifer - animal graffitti is becoming a real problem in rural England. Creatures as diverse as cows and owls have been known to be vandalised in this shocking manner. What's more, they seem to be using biros instead of spray paint, causing untold discomfort to the animal involved.

"animal graffiti"!!! Good one Jon, I like it. I'm still waiting to see my first sheep with "Gouranga" spray painted on it.

Dunstan, photographs of the flowers and funghi are stunning. Well done.

I'm glad Jon has picked up on that. I'd like to state here and now that anyone caught writing with a biro on any of our animals is going to get a good kicking. If you want to scribble on something with a Bic then use the palm of your hand, or the side of a bus stop, that's what they're for.

Last year some day-tripping scousers cornered a Tamworth Pig in our top field and Tipex'd 'LIVERPOOL FC' all over it. Both we and the pig were quite distraught.

I've not seen 'Gouranga' or any football related scrawl yet, but last week I did see a Wessex Saddleback Pig with 'Thank God for Jesus' written in felt tip.

Maybe it was a sign? Like those patches of rising damp people find and claim is the spitting image of Jesus, or a sugar cube that looks like Muhammad from a certain angle, in the right light.

Maybe they're getting tired of 'subtle' up there?

Well, we can't blaim that one on the Jews! They're not to fond of Pigs or Jesus.

Haven't you across-the-pond-ers heard of ear tags? Sheesh. ;-)

I believe these people are known to the police. The Met are looking for 4 people after a group of permed youths were seen running from Hackney City Farm shouting "Ey ey ey. Caaaam it down!", leaving a total of 3 donkeys up on bricks with their trotters removed.

And I think the betting is rigged, Dunstan. All those gambling lambs seem to have rolled [on] a five.

    ...I'll get my coat!

    Matt.

I think we used to do ear tags, but when the lambs are born you have to spray them otherwise you can't tell who goes with what without catching everything and reading the tag.

We also sprayed them to show if they'd been wormed, or had their feet done, or whatever (a coloured blob on their head, or back). When you have 100 sheep in a pen trying to remember which ones you've treated is a bit tricky without some kind of marking.

That was always my job. Mum did the hard work, and I moped around with a spray can wishing I could be inside playing Chuckie Egg or watching Night Rider.

Oooo Chuckie Egg - a classic. That and Killa Gorilla :)

As for the gambling lamb, it's a lamb FOR gambling. The lambs are the chips - hence the numbers. Obvious.

Ah yes. Perhaps 2 competing shepherds have run of the field at the same time, and the dog that rounds up the highest score in 5 minutes wins? One Man and His Dog with added oomph.

And regarding my previous comment. Donkeys obviously have hooves, not trotters (unless some strange interbreeding has been taking place).

Well, now that I think about it...we always painted the number on the lambs as well -- with an extra little mark to indicate if the lamb was a twin or triplet (or, god forbid, quadruplet).

But, alas, we sold all of our sheep a few years ago, so I'm glad to catch a few pics of gamboling lambs. :-)
